ABOUT

Anil Mistry was born in the Highfields area of Leicester. He loved to draw from a very early age, a skill that developed into a wider passion for art, design and music which led him to collaborate with artists in the UK dance music scene of the early 90s as a stylist, graphic designer and director. During this period he also designed a number of successful streetwear brands, resulting in his work featuring in the V&A’s seminal Streetstyles exhibition.

His growing interest in the moving image led to a degree in graphic design and animation, after which he moved to London to begin a creative career in television as a presenter, producer and director. He went on to senior creative director roles with Paramount, The Walt Disney Company and Omnicom, then broke away to form a solo career as a creative director - developing projects for Louis Vuitton, Rolls Royce, Harrods, Stylist Magazine, Channel 4, Nike, Footlocker, Estee Lauder and Bombay Sapphire amongst many others. in 2015, after many years of producing and directing moving content, he decided to apply his director’s eye and love for art direction to the still image - and a new passion was born.

As well as working on photography projects for brands and organisations around the world, his work has featured in Black and White Photography Magazine, Amateur Photographer magazine, Eighty Degrees Magazine, RIBA Magazine Hong Kong, The Goods and The Idler amongst others. He was a winner on the Sky Arts TV show: “Rankin’s 2020” with his work featuring in the series and the accompanying book published by Thames and Hudson. His work has been exhibited at The Wereldmuseum, Amsterdam, and he has collaborated with Billingham Bags , Fujifilm and Lomography .

Anil is a passionate speaker on the subject of photography, and has guested on numerous popular photography podcasts and written articles on the subject.

He launched the UNUSUAL EYE imprint under which he has published a number of photography books , and his latest book HOMETOWN has been published by documentary photography imprint Fistful of Books.
